What Artwork Do I Need For My Podcast?

by | Sep 20, 2022 | Blogs, Podcasts, Social Media, Starting a Podcast

Even though podcasting is generally thought of in terms of audio, the visuals that you use to represent your podcast are very important. Your podcast and its artwork are an extension of your company’s brand and your personal brand, so it’s vital to make sure that it looks good while also getting the message across. Based on the platforms you’re using to host and promote your podcast, you will need graphics that fit different requirements. However, compiled here are the most common and basic types of graphics and the sizes you will need for your podcast.

Podcast Graphics For Audio Hosting Platforms:

Podcast Cover Art Dimensions

If you are hosting your podcast on an audio platform the basic graphic you will need is your Cover Art. While most hosting platforms have some minimum size requirements, to get listed on Apple Podcasts you will need a 3000 x 3000 px image. The recommended file formats are JPG or PNG.

Dimensions for Custom Favicon

If you’re hosting your podcast on a platform, like Transistor, that allows for further customization of your podcast website, you’ll want to upload a custom favicon. A favicon is the graphic that appears in the tab of a web browser. For Transistor, the recommended favicon dimensions are 192×192 pixels. Because of how small of a size the favicon is displayed at, it’s best to use a simplified version of your podcast’s logo.

Podcast Graphics For YouTube

Many podcasts either post a video version of their podcast on YouTube or host it entirely on YouTube. If you’re doing that, there are a few additional sizes and types of graphics you’ll need.

Your Podcast’s YouTube Channel Profile Picture

Your channel profile picture is displayed in a small circle next to all of your videos and when your channel comes up in search results. Because of the circular frame, the first thing you’ll want to do is create a circular version of your cover art and or logo. The recommended size is an 800 x 800 px image that renders at 98×98 px. It can be uploaded as a JPG, GIF, BMP, or PNG file. Animated GIFs are not allowed. The picture must follow the YouTube community guidelines which are outlined here.

Because The Hard Corp Marketing Show’s logo was already a circle, the profile picture for YouTube is just a downsized version of the show’s cover art

Your Podcast’s YouTube Channel Banner Image

Your banner image is shown on your channel page above all of your videos. Because of the different devices that YouTube is available on (Mobile, Desktop, TV), the image size and safe areas are unique for your banner image. The minimum dimension required is 2048×1152 px with an aspect ratio of 16:9. At this minimum size, the safe area for your text and logos is 1235×338 px. If your image is too large, your banner image might be cropped when viewed on certain devices. The recommended file types are JPG or PNG.

Video Thumbnail For Each Podcast Episode

This graphic should be specific to each episode but the basic requirements remain the same. Your thumbnails should be 1280×720 px. These can be uploaded as JPG or PNG. If you don’t have anything designed yet and you really want to get your video out there, when uploading, YouTube will display multiple freeze frames from the podcast recording that you can choose between.

Podcast Thumbnail for YouTube “Podcast” Playlist

This image should have a 1:1 aspect ratio (square) and the recommended dimensions are 1280 x 1280 pixels. According to YouTube, the file should be less than 10 MB in size and uploaded in image formats such as JPG, GIF, or PNG. The easiest way to create this image is to simply downsize your existing 3000 x 3000 px podcast cover art to 1280 x 1280 px. Tools like Canva make this extremely easy.
